# Reviewing - ReviewDeck docs

> Notes and drawings, ranges that loop, replies, the review's status and the playback settings.

ReviewDeck 0.3.1. Checked 21 October 2026. https://reviewdeck.app/docs/reviewing

## Notes and drawings

Every note sits on a frame, and a drawing on the picture shows exactly what it means. The tools sit under the picture.

Clip: https://reviewdeck.app/docs/clips/reviewing/notes-and-drawings.mp4

1. (0:00) Pause on the frame and pick a tool: **Pen**, **Box**, **Circle**, **Arrow** or **Text**.
2. (0:03) Draw on the picture. The colour button beside the tools picks the ink, and while the pen is on, a size slider shows above the **Pen** button.
3. (0:13) Made a mistake? **Undo** takes back the last mark, and **Clear** removes them all.
4. (0:17) Type the note and click **Add note at this frame**.
5. (0:26) In the notes list, click a note to go to its frame with its drawing on the picture.

### Finding notes

- **Search notes or #tags** - Type a word, or a #tag written in a note's text, to show only the notes that have it.
- The sort menu, which reads **Time** to start - Sort by time, author or status.
- **Unresolved** - Hides the notes already marked Addressed or Won't fix.
- Name chips - Once other people have left notes on this version, click a name to hide or show theirs.

The review's owner can mark other people's notes **Open**, **Addressed** or **Won't fix** as they work through them.

> **Good to know** Your notes save to the review's folder as you add them. There is no save button.

## Ranges and loops

A note can cover a stretch of time as well as a moment, and a range plays round in a loop while you look at it.

Clip: https://reviewdeck.app/docs/clips/reviewing/ranges-and-loops.mp4

1. (0:00) Every note sits in the lane just above the scrub bar: a dot for a moment, a bar for a range.
2. (0:04) Drag sideways from one of your dots to stretch it into a range.
3. (0:07) Drag either end of your bar to move that end. A tip above the lane shows the in and out.
4. (0:09) Select a range note and **Loop** lights up beside the gear. Press play and the range plays round. Click **Loop** to stop.

### While you write

As you type a note, a dashed dot rides the playhead. Drag sideways from it, or along an empty stretch of the lane, to make the note a range before you add it. **Add note on this range** then saves it, and **Remove range** turns it back into a moment.

A range never moves as a whole, so drag its ends.

## Replies and @mentions

Answer a note where it is, and bring someone in by name.

Clip: https://reviewdeck.app/docs/clips/reviewing/replies-and-mentions.mp4

1. (0:00) Hover a note and click **Reply**.
2. (0:04) Type your answer and click **Add reply**. It sits under the note it answers.
3. (0:11) To bring someone into a note, type @ and the start of their name, then pick them from the list. In a reply, type their whole @Name.

A reply or an @mention of someone puts the review in their **Needs you** list. More in [Needs you and pop-ups](/docs/working-as-a-team#needs-you-and-pop-ups).

## Status and Final

The badge beside the version shows where the review stands, and everyone in the library sees the same one.

Clip: https://reviewdeck.app/docs/clips/reviewing/status-and-final.mp4

1. (0:00) Click the status badge in the review's header.
2. (0:05) Pick **Awaiting review**, **In review**, **Changes requested** or **Approved**.

**Awaiting review** greys out once anyone has left a note on the version.

### Final (Team)

An admin can mark a review **Final** from the same menu. It asks first, then the review is approved and the badge reads Final: only an admin can add a version or change its status from then on. Choosing another status unlocks it. Admins are set up under [Admin tools](/docs/team-and-studio#admin-tools).

A reviewer outside the library can approve or ask for changes in their own copy, and their answer sets the status when you bring their notes back. A returned **Changes requested** shows on that version whatever the badge is set to, until that reviewer sends a new answer.

## Speed, gamma and quality

The gear under the picture holds the playback settings.

Clip: https://reviewdeck.app/docs/clips/reviewing/speed-gamma-and-quality.mp4

1. (0:00) Click the gear under the picture.
2. (0:02) **Speed** plays at 75%, 50%, 25% or 10%.
3. (0:09) **Gamma** lifts the shadows, for a dark shot or a shared screen.
4. (0:14) **Quality** switches between the copies the video was saved in: Fast, Normal and Quality.

Speed and gamma last for the review you're on. While either is set, a chip beside the gear shows it, and clicking the chip puts it back. Gamma never changes your notes, the PDF or what you send.

## Keyboard shortcuts

On a video, image or audio review:

- <kbd>Space</kbd> - Play or pause
- <kbd>←</kbd> <kbd>→</kbd> - One frame back or forward
- <kbd>Shift</kbd> <kbd>←</kbd> <kbd>→</kbd> - About a second back or forward
- <kbd>P</kbd> <kbd>B</kbd> <kbd>C</kbd> <kbd>A</kbd> <kbd>T</kbd> - Pen, box, circle, arrow, text
- <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> <kbd>Z</kbd> - Undo the last mark (<kbd>Cmd</kbd> <kbd>Z</kbd> on a Mac)
- <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> <kbd>Y</kbd> - Redo it (<kbd>Cmd</kbd> <kbd>Shift</kbd> <kbd>Z</kbd> on a Mac)
- <kbd>[</kbd> <kbd>]</kbd> - Set the in and out of your selected note, or the one you're writing, to the frame on screen
- <kbd>F</kbd> - Full screen
- <kbd>N</kbd> - Show or hide the notes in full screen
- <kbd>Esc</kbd> - Leave full screen, or put a range back while you drag it

Audio has no drawing tools, so the drawing keys do nothing there. A still has no playback, so <kbd>Space</kbd>, the arrows and <kbd>[</kbd> <kbd>]</kbd> do nothing on one. The same list is in Settings, under **Keyboard shortcuts**. The 3D viewer's keys are on [Getting around](/docs/3d-review#getting-around).
